In this exclusive interview with Roe Magazine, influencer Tashi shares insights into her journey, how she navigates the influencer industry, and the principles she follows to remain authentic while working with brands. As she prepares to meet her parents for lunch, she reflects on the key lessons she has learned and offers valuable advice for aspiring creators.
Understanding Your Identity as a Creator
The foundation of a successful influencer career starts with self-awareness. Tashi emphasizes the importance of understanding who you are as a person and how you present yourself to an audience.
"It's a big responsibility," she explains. "The people you choose to work with reflect not just your social image but also your values."
Before endorsing any product, Tashi makes it a priority to test it herself. Whether it’s an app, a skincare brand, or a new tech gadget, she asks herself: What value does this bring to my audience? This intrinsic motivation—the desire to genuinely enhance her followers' lives—drives her content creation.
The Importance of Due Diligence
The influencer industry offers incredible opportunities, but it also requires careful navigation. Tashi stresses the importance of conducting thorough research before signing contracts with brands.
"Make sure you Google the company, verify their identity, and don’t be afraid to ask for proof of legitimacy," she advises.
Legal documents are a crucial part of brand deals, and rushing into agreements without reading the fine print can be risky. Tashi suggests taking your time, seeking legal advice if necessary, and ensuring that everything in a contract aligns with your values and professional standards.
Staying Authentic in Sponsored Content
When it comes to brand partnerships, authenticity is key. Tashi believes that every sponsorship should align with her platform’s purpose and the value she wants to provide to her audience.
"For me, my audience is like one person I want to help. If I help just one person, then my job is done," she says.
She advises creators to thoroughly research brands—not just for legitimacy, but also to understand their reputation. Have they been involved in controversies? Do their values align with yours? Once an influencer signs a contract, they become a representative of that brand, so choosing partnerships wisely is crucial.
Strategies for Audience Growth and Retention
One of the most effective strategies Tashi has used to grow and retain her audience is deeply understanding their motivations, frustrations, and aspirations. "It's easy to distance yourself from your followers online, but having a clear idea of who you’re speaking to is key," she shares.
As someone with a background in UX design, Tashi takes an analytical approach, creating a persona of her ideal audience and tailoring content to resonate with them. Interestingly, she often finds that her audience reflects her own experiences.
"Many times, I'm just speaking to myself—my past self, my younger self, someone who needed the content I now create," she explains.
Tashi’s content is deeply personal, particularly her focus on heartbreak. She started her platform to spread awareness about the emotional impact of breakups, a topic she felt was often overlooked. "I realized so many people were silently suffering, feeling like they had to ‘just move on,’ but heartbreak is real and valid," she says. Her ability to create a personal yet universal connection has been a major factor in building a loyal audience.
Building a Standout Personal Brand
For those looking to carve out their own space in the crowded influencer industry, Tashi encourages experimentation.
"You won’t find your voice without trying different things," she says. "It’s okay to take inspiration from other creators. Every artist in history has done that!" She highlights that through trial and error, creators naturally develop their own style. Small, unique elements—whether in content style, storytelling, or presentation—ultimately shape a creator’s brand identity.
"Every industry is crowded. But that shouldn't stop you. The people who resonate with your content will find you," she assures aspiring influencers.
Advice for Aspiring Influencers
Tashi’s biggest piece of advice for those starting out is simple: keep going. "The people who first laughed at you will later admire you," she says.
She recalls the early days of her journey, posting content with little engagement, facing skepticism from others. But she never let external opinions deter her. "Whether you get millions of views or just a handful, this is your space. Your audience will find you," she says.
She encourages creators to stay true to themselves, experiment, and not fear judgment. Social media is a powerful tool for self-expression and connection, and those who remain authentic will ultimately thrive.
"Not everyone will like you, and that’s okay. But the people who do resonate with you will love you," she concludes.
Final Thoughts
For Tashi, content creation is more than just a career—it’s a way to give back, to provide value, and to help others feel seen. And that, she believes, is what truly defines success in the influencer industry.
